The first most common elements in my 3 texts are the use of certain colors to emphasize certain attributes which are relevant in the thriller genre. Over the three texts we mainly felt that we should use red, black and white to create different moods in each piece to represent the genre. In our film piece, we really focused on the idea of using low-lit lighting throughout to create a dark mood, which represents the personality of the main character due to whats happening in his mind. Also we made sure that when the main character was turning bad and committing the crimes, we ensured that he was wearing all black, with a hood up to make it more menacing to see in the dark and create the emphasis on the mystery of this random character. Also within the other two texts of the film poster and magazine, we used red, white and black to further emphasize these moods. The use of black was mainly used to once again create the darker mood in the film which allows the audience to have an insight into what the film entails. Also the color red is very apparent due to the relation that you can make through the conventions of a thriller. This is because a person would normally associate red with danger and blood which is occurs and is seen a lot within our film. The white has been used to contrast the vision on both piece to try and catch a audience members eye as it is very important that there is a lot going on to explain what the film is about.
We decided to choose specific characters in our print text in order to promote the film in the right way. This is because we decided to use the same image that we had captured for both print texts that had been created. This is because we felt that is was very important for a viewer or reader to identify that it is the same film through the relation as the cover and poster are very dark and would struggle to catch the eye without their poses and clothing. The main character who seemed to be nice, is looking at the camera in normal clothes with no hood up. This would create a sense of relief as they are showing that he is normal. However in both texts, as he has schizophrenia, i have decided to blur his face in an attempt to show the viewers that he has something wrong with him and its to do with inside his head as that is the main thing that had been concentrated on in order to ensure that the viewers knew their was a twist on the film. However the split personality was very different in order to try and create a different mood with the character. We had him looking down with his hood up in all black. He is placed to the side of what seems to be the normal character, to emphasize the fact that this character has some negative impact on the main character, due to the darkness that he is releasing behind the main character. We have done this through the fact that you can't see his face as well as blurring him so he can't be recognizable and allows for the audience to question why he is in the poster. This will help portray his personality negatively due to mood being created through clothing, editing and the pose.
I feel that compared to the preliminary texts we first made, i feel i have been able to create an effective campaign. This is due to the conventions that i have a great understanding of, which have allowed me to continuously implement them, without tiring due to the need for them. Also i feel like everything i have added down to color coordination, the film name, lighting and colors are all very relevant to the audience and always keep the audience on their toes. I feel that as an A-Level student, i have made the best film texts possible by ensuring that every piece is as professional and realistic as i could make it.
I have made a relationship between both characters in my film poster and magazine cover but for the mind to be open to what they think. In our print texts, we decided to try and not focus on the narrative too much as our main idea, was to keep the audience guessing and on their toes. We tried to do this by enhancing the fact of mystery due to complexity of the story line. As it is very hard to portray in a poster or magazine cover, we decided to try and not focus on the idea of implementing words that will give away the story line bar the film name and pictures. This is why we have two people who look very similar but are also blurred to try and hint at the fact one of them has schizophrenia and the other is an figment of their imagination and its actually the main character doing it but they don't understand. The only other way we really portrayed the narrative is through the use of the dark backgrounds, which represents the mood and outcomes of the film due to the graphic nature of the murders and problems which the main character is fighting.
The use of narrative helped us attract the audience in a few different ways. This is through the use of mystery through every single on of our texts. This is because the story line is so complex and not many people would understand the affect that a mental illness can have on a person. Therefor if we give previews into whats going to happen without giving to much away, the audience should become attracted. This is because they are given an insight into the film without actually being opened up to it, until they watch the film. Therefor the audience will become drawn to watching the actual film as they have been lead to follow some exciting new concept and been torn away from it so quickly. Therefore they hopefully will be drawn into watching the film, due to the complex story line tackling schizophrenia at its most horrid state, as well as the suspension and anticipation created from the texts that have been made. This will set up for an interesting film due to the fact it is very out there and it has never been seen before.
After researching the thriller genre, i have an understanding of how the genre works and what certain conventions are normally emphasized to create the thriller genre feeling. For example in all of our print texts, we used the idea of mystery to draw the audience in through anticipation and suspense as they are being lead far enough to gain an interest in the film. We had done this by making sure that there wasn't mass amounts of hints in the texts to emphasize the actual mental illness, so there was still mystery around our film. The other main convention that we used was the of low-lit lighting in both text pieces. We mainly emphasized this through the dark, dull black backgrounds that needed to be used in our film. This was mainly due to the fact that we wanted audience member to have an extended idea of what they are getting themselves in for, due to the fact that the negative lighting is heavily used. In turn, this would create a negative affect for the viewer as they can only see darkness occurring which would lead them to believe that this film is very dark and negative.
After researching the other thriller films, the main convention that caused large affects for the viewers, is the fact that the films start very slow paced, with a build up to a face paced scene that would normally contain a lot of action. We used this in Psychosis by starting the trailer off slow, with many eerie shots of wildlife, barbed wire and barrenness of the land, emphasizing the fact that the film is only just getting started, hopefully, creating the affect of negativity which should lead them to feel suspenseful. As the trailer progresses we decided to use quick cuts and sharp editing to help our story line progress. We have used this to emphasize the fact that the antagonist is taking over and the death, action and decay will start to pick up. This would hopefully give the audience the idea that the characters are turning bad and cannot be stopped. This has been seen in my texts through the use of blurring their faces and the main antagonist standing behind as he is about to fully break through.
The institutional information has been added into both of my texts in order to try and create a more professional feeling towards both. For example some company logos have been used which are big, to try and create the effect that this is a big film and should be successful, however it is only very small and in the corner of the text. The production company name has been used in both to emphasize the fact they helped make the film to give them credit it in the small print.
